International Tax Consultant, Derren Joseph, is Helping Americans take their business Global

Today we’d like to introduce you to Derren Joseph.

It’s an honor to speak with you today. Why don’t you give us some details about you and your story. How did you get to where you are today?

Hi. The honor is all mine. Thank you for making the time to speak with me. Since 2013, I have been based in Singapore where I run an international tax team at Moores Rowland Asia Pacific. We have over 30 offices in 12 countries with over 1500 staff. How did I get there? Well, my father was a tax accountant all his adult life. He qualified in London in the early 1970s (where I was born) and eventually he moved to South Florida. That is how I ended up in the United States as well.

After working with him for a while, I went off on my own and was lucky enough to land a role in Asia. Now I’m at www.htj.tax

I’m sure your success has not come easily. What challenges have you had to overcome along the way?

My biggest challenge? Fear.

Before moving to Asia, I had never even visited Asia, so I had zero clue what I was getting into. Despite this fear of the unknown, I was excited by the promise of taking my career international in general, and to Asia in particular.

Legendary investor Jim Rogers famously said that “If you were smart in 1807 you moved to London, if you were smart in 1907 you moved to New York City, and if you are smart in 2007 you move to Asia.” So I left the West, moved to Asia and from Asia, my team and I, service clients all over the world.

Let’s talk about the work you do. What do you specialize in and why should someone work with you over the competition?

I specialize in helping American entrepreneurs, business owners and investors expand outside of the US. One of the biggest challenges for Americans doing deals outside of the US is taxation. We are an international tax team.

The health crisis has helped change the world of work forever. People now see that once they have decent WIFI, they can work from anywhere. We help them structure their tax situation to make this happen.

There are very few international tax teams that can work with Americans that are –
– C-Suite professionals working internationally
– High-Net Worth Digital Nomads
– Cross Border Investors including crypto investors and crypto traders.

Every day, I speak to successful investors who see the opportunities that come from living internationally but they struggle to find teams that are qualified and experienced in the kind of international tax work that we do at htj.tax

What’s your best piece of advice for readers who desire to find success in their life?

Information is power. Information is freedom. So never stop learning

Speaking of success, what does the word mean to you?

My father and I would talk about that word for hours at a time. Success is subjective and deeply personal. For me? It means achieving the objectives that I set for myself and my family. Objectives that are not narrowly defined by dollars and cents. But in terms of freedom, security and happiness.

What’s next for you?

My eldest son, Dre, is graduating with a Law degree (a JD plus LLM) from the University of Miami later this year. So the next step is onboarding him into the business. He will be the third generation to work in international tax in our family.

My father passed away in 2020 but I know he is looking down and feeling proud. We work with many family businesses so it is helpful that we have that background ourselves. It helps us to service our clients in a more meaningful way.
