New App Lets You Video Chat a ChatGPT-Powered Avatar

Call Annie, a new chatbot app, takes the experience to a whole new level by adding video chat. The app, which is available for iOS and the web, creates a female virtual avatar that mimics a real person. Apple’s Neural Engine is used for deep learning in Call Annie. Video chat mode is only available on iPhone 12 and later. Users with older iPhones are limited to audio chat.

Annie is able to hold a video chat with you, and can also offer emotional support. She can be used as an AI companion with whom to discuss any subject and get a new perspective. Annie is powered by OpenAI’s ChatGPT and can answer virtually any question that you ask.

A transcription of the conversation is sent to ChatGPT, but no voice is recorded. Call Annie’s developers revealed that the avatar’s lip movements and facial expressions are animated to match actual speech. The developers of Call Annie plan to add ChatGPT-4 Smarts, a character, a backstory and a memory so that she can remember who you are.
